THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE ISHAN SCHOOL TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ISLAM IN KAZAKHSTAN: THE EXAMPLE OF APPAQ ISHAN SEYITAKHMETOV

Abstract

This research examines the spiritual leadership and religious contributions of Appaq Ishan Seitakhmetov, with special attention to the mosque-madrasa complex which he founded in Shayan village, Baidibek District, Turkistan Region. It provides a study of the institutional, historical, and cultural context of this institute and the unique education program implemented inside it. Read an account of Appaq Ishan Seitakhmetov (with a biography), showing how he promoted Sufi teachings in the area of Turkistan, became a respected spiritual leader among local communities, and developed into a highly influential religious leader, backed up by archival materials. The study also aims to examine the historical construction of the Shayan mosque-madrasa complex, examining the religious functions fulfilled by the educational institution and assessing its influence within the region and state. The present-day preservation of this historical-cultural monument has also been discussed. This study situates the significance and function of Appaq Ishan Seitakhmetov's madrasa within the broader frameworks of Central Asian and Kazakhstani religious scholarship, and examines the distinctive elements of the pedagogical approach employed by the institution. The findings indicate that religious instruction at the Shayan madrasa followed educational paradigms historically prevalent in Central Asia. The research identifies the specific Islamic disciplines that were emphasized. Results indicate that the Shayan madrasa, founded by Appaq Ishan Seitakhmetov, functioned as a religious education campus, historically and culturally important and of significant importance as a site for spiritual leadership. This educational establishment lies at the core of Kazakhstan's Islamic heritage being clearly demonstrated.
