Abstract

The review is based on the analysis of articles from two major specialized journals associated with the Taylor & Francis publishing platform: International Journal of Heritage Studies and Heritage & Society, specializing in "Heritage Studies". Both academic journals with a global coverage of topics have high citation rates in scientometric databases, and differ from other journals working in the field of heritage by their verified theoretical approach. The dynamics of how, at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, a philosophical revision of concepts related to heritage is taking place is shown, and why this period is called the period of critical heritage research. Kazakhstani cases of objects included in the nomination of architectural monuments of history and culture of Almaty are considered, archival resources and works of Kazakhstani authors on heritage are analyzed. Heritage is interpreted as a concept with a temporal philosophical core used to actualize the past, having not only symbolic, but also ideological and epistemic weight for the current modernity. This approach also allows us to consider heritage as a multi-actor process of constant rethinking of identity.
